Plan your perfect safari with our comprehensive guide to Kenya's seasons, weather patterns, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but the experience varies dramatically depending on when you visit. From the dry season's concentrated wildlife viewing to the green season's lush landscapes and newborn animals, each period offers something unique.

Dry Season: June to October

This is Kenya's peak safari season, and for good reason. The vegetation thins out, making animals easier to spot as they congregate around water sources. This is also when the Great Migration reaches the Masai Mara.

  • Wildlife viewing: Excellent — animals gather at rivers and waterholes
  • Weather: Warm days (25–30°C), cool mornings, minimal rainfall
  • Crowds: Peak season — book 6–12 months in advance
  • Prices: Highest of the year

Short Rains: November to December

A brief rainy period that transforms the landscape. The rains are typically short afternoon showers, and safari activities continue largely uninterrupted. Bird migration from Europe and Asia makes this a birder's paradise.

  • Wildlife viewing: Good — animals are well-fed and active
  • Weather: Warm with afternoon showers
  • Crowds: Lower — good value for money
  • Bonus: Migratory birds arrive, lush green landscapes

Hot Dry Season: January to March

Warm and dry with excellent visibility. This is calving season in the Serengeti, and predator activity increases. Kenya's coast (Diani Beach, Mombasa) is perfect during this time.

  • Wildlife viewing: Very good — predators are highly active
  • Weather: Hot (28–34°C), sunny, dry
  • Crowds: Moderate
  • Best for: Beach + safari combo trips

Long Rains: April to May

The wettest period, with consistent heavy rainfall. Some camps and lodges close, and roads in remote areas can become impassable. However, this is the most affordable time to visit, and the landscapes are spectacularly green.

  • Wildlife viewing: Challenging — thick vegetation, dispersed animals
  • Weather: Heavy, sustained rain
  • Crowds: Very low — best deals available
  • Best for: Budget travelers, photographers seeking green landscapes

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors, we recommend July to September for the migration, or January to February for great all-round wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. For value, the November to mid-December shoulder season offers an excellent balance of game viewing, weather, and pricing.
